Chapter Seven

Jeremy was thrilled when Hart agreed to another self-defense lesson, during which he showed Jeremy another, better way to defend against a shirt-grab. Guys often started out a fight by grabbing a handful of shirt and Hart taught Jeremy to sweep his arm around to trap the other guy’s arm and pull him down, leaving his opponent open for a knee to the face. They practiced that for right- and left-handed attackers, along with the other moves from last time.

Again, they got sweaty. Again, they laughed. Hart teased the hell out of him, making fun of his lean frame and lack of power and calling him Bruiser every chance he got. They found out they were both ticklish, and from time to time what started out as a serious practice sequence turned into one or the other of them jabbing a finger into an armpit and wiggling.

“God damn it. Stop fucking tickling me!” Hart exclaimed.

Jeremy couldn’t help laughing, and Hart would try to stay indignant, but usually ended up laughing himself.

Good times.

Throughout it all, Jeremy stifled his attraction to Hart. For the most part, he was successful. He kept telling himself Hart was just a friend. People battled unrequited feelings all the time. Students attracted to their professors kept it under wraps. Same went when a person fell for the sibling of a buddy. Jeremy had a brief crush on a friend’s dad once, but he’d been able to ignore that and act normally.

The problem was, Hart was different. Every time Jeremy thought he had himself under control, something would happen to prove him wrong. He’d get too close to Hart’s face and he’d remember what it felt like to kiss him and have his tongue in his mouth. Or he’d have a grip on Hart’s arms and the muscles tensing would send an arrow of lust right to his cock. Sometimes all it took was an innocent exhalation or a grunt.

And yet, he couldn’t stay away. Any scrap of time he could get with him, he greedily took. When he found out Hart liked video games too, it was like finding a cache of silver in a mine he’d thought was almost tapped out. They played ProHockey for hours and surprisingly, Jeremy was better than Hart and he didn’t let Hart forget it.

Eventually, Jeremy realized he and Hart had become genuine friends. If his relentless attraction for Hart was a puppy straining at his leash, said puppy seemed to have calmed down and learned to heel. It got to the point where when Hart asked if Jeremy wanted to do something, like catch a movie, Jeremy no longer reflexively said yes, even if he had something urgent or important to do. It didn’t feel like Hart might decide Jeremy wasn’t worth his time anymore. Hart really liked him.

And yet, Jeremy still felt nervous about asking Hart to attend his gallery showing. Half of him was worried Hart wouldn’t want to go, which would mean he wasn’t as good a friend as Jeremy had been pretending he was.
